Beyond Almaty: canyons, lakes & dunes

Different landscapes. Different moods. Find the places that speak to you.

Choose a landscape that suits your attention

Beyond Almaty, very different landscapes invite very different kinds of days. Charyn offers canyon scenery; Kolsai is known for mountain lakes; at Kaindy, tree trunks rise from the water. Altyn-Emel brings dunes and rock landscapes into the picture. Instead of ranking them by a photograph, ask what draws you: water, open ground, dramatic shapes or the pleasure of walking among them.

Then think about how you like to look. A photographer may want time to wait and return to a viewpoint, while a family may prefer a short walk and a comfortable picnic stop. Someone who loves scenery may still dislike uneven paths. Describe those preferences to your organiser. The strongest route connects a place with the way you can best enjoy it.

Make the road part of the decision

These destinations are not neighbouring city attractions. Before combining them, ask for a realistic account of each transfer, the road conditions and the time available at the destination. Include breaks and meals in that conversation. An itinerary can look rich on paper while leaving very little time outside the vehicle, particularly when it begins and ends at the same city hotel.

Compare a concentrated day in one landscape with a route that includes an overnight stay. Ask about the accommodation, facilities, luggage arrangements and meal options so you understand what the second version involves. A quieter evening outside the city may be appealing, but comfort needs differ. Choosing deliberately is more useful than discovering the practical details after a long journey.

Ask what the walk will actually involve

The name of a destination does not tell you how the visit works on foot. Ask about the chosen route, surface, climbing, descent and places to pause. Confirm whether the planned viewpoint is suitable for everyone in your group. If you need a shorter option or frequent seated rests, say so early. Your enjoyment should not depend on keeping pace with an unsuitable walk.

Check access and conditions near departure, then pack for the agreed route. Wear suitable shoes and carry water, sun protection and appropriate layers. Ask which supplies are available from the organiser and what you need to bring. For a family outing, discuss the return walk as carefully as the outward one: enthusiasm at the start can become tired legs later in the day.

Give each stop enough time to become a place

A short photo stop shows you a view; more time allows you to notice its texture. You may become aware of the scale of a canyon, the stillness around a lake or how different the same scene feels from another permitted viewpoint. Leave a portion of the visit free from instructions. Looking quietly can be a satisfying activity in itself.

If you enjoy photography, explain that when booking so the pace can reflect it. Stay within permitted areas and follow your guide's directions rather than searching for an angle beyond the route. A companion who takes fewer photographs may prefer a nearby rest or a conversation. Agree on a meeting place and time where appropriate, keeping the group plan clear for everyone.

Leave the landscape ready for the next visitor

Follow current park guidance, remain on permitted routes and carry out your litter, including the small items that are easy to forget after lunch. Leave natural objects where you find them and give wildlife space. Ask your guide about local expectations before you begin. Care for a place is expressed in ordinary decisions, repeated throughout the day rather than saved for a final gesture.

Tell SHANYRAQ which landscape interests you most, how much driving you welcome and the walking pace you need. Those details help shape a route with time for the journey and the destination. You do not have to visit every celebrated scene to have a rewarding nature trip. A few places experienced with attention can leave a deeper impression than a crowded collection of stops.
